| The fibulae
-which you can
compare to the today
brooch - were largely used in the ancient
cultures. Wore
independently by men or women, both for ornamental or practical use -much as we use
safety pins, to keep
together clothing and robes. Most of the fibulae were made out of
bronze or even iron, but the richest Etruscans could afford very intricate and complex
silver or golden ones. The fibulae are the most characteristic product of the Etruscan art
of jewelry, and have been found in many excavations, mainly in tombs among the
dead's possessions. The fibulae changed in shapes over time, from simple buttons to bow or
twisted-bow fibula, dragon or leech- shaped or figurate fibulae.
