If you're English speaking and want to know more about Cortona, the options can be frustrating. Only guidebooks, some paragraphs in general sources, and this author article in Macmillan's 1992 Dictionary of Art and Architecture offer opportunities. That scarcity prompted Philancy Holder to write Cortona in Context. Tuscan libraries provided rich insight into what made Cortona look like it does and 20 year experience as an art historian suggested methods to arrive at observation and conclusions about the city's architectural heritage. Philancy Holder and editor husband Tomas Pallen teach at Austin Peay State University, a small liberal art institution in Clarksville, Tennessee. Through their association with the University of Georgia Programs Abroad, they discovered Cortona and, in 1985 became part time residents. For the present they spend their summers there, doing research on Italian projects and enjoying Cortona's piazze, palazzi and people There is no hard back copy available, all books listed here are paperback copies. |
